Daniel Capetillo, a 17-year-old San Jose resident, who was fatally shot in a suspected gang-related attack, was the 43rd homicide , tying a 20-year record set in 1997.

According to police reports, Capetillo was shot late on Friday in the 900 block of Pacific Avenue, near the intersection of West San Carlos Street and Lincoln Avenue. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

A teenager was also involved in San Jose’s 42nd homicide, but in this case, Adonis Muldrow was arrested as a suspect. The 15-year-old faces adult charges in connection to a crime spree that ended with one dead and two San Jose Police officers wounded.

Police nabbed 15-year-old Adonis Muldrow eight days after he and 26-year-old Jonathan Wilbanks allegedly went on the crime spree that included four armed robberies, a carjacking and a shootout with officers in San Jose.

If the Capetillo murder is linked to gang violence, it will mean that 14 of the 43 homicides this year are believed to be gang-related. Others fall into categories of family violence, crimes against homeless, child abuse and alchohol-related violence.
The ages of the victims in the 43 homicides range from 17 months to 70 years old, with nearly half, under the age of 30. All but four were male.

Although a NeighborWebSJ map of the homicides shows that there was at least one slaying in each of San Jose’s 10 council districts, most happened in central and east San Jose.

Concern escalated in August, when eight slayings occurred in 11 days – one just hours after a peace march in East San Jose called for an end to violence and police action. In response, the San Jose Police Department revived its gang unit. And police and city office held dueling public safety meetings as the result of relationship that soured over pensions and other proposed contract changes.

The murder rate slowed in the following months, with many blaming a loss of officers on the San Jose police force.

In the most recent slaying that total for the year 20 43, the Novemeber 24 arrest of 15-year-old Mudrow in Concord came after police union and San Jose city officials joined to offer a $20,000 reward for information leading to his capture.

Police believe Wilbanks and Muldrow’s crime spree started at 7:25 p.m. Nov. 16 at a Little Caesar’s Pizza on Story Road when the pair allegedly robbed the restaurant.
They then allegedly moved on to rob a gas station on East Capitol at 7:40 p.m., a Jack In the Box on Curtner at 8:43 p.m. and a spa on Bird at 8:58 p.m.

At 9 p.m. they allegedly attempted to carjack Rory Parkpettiford in the parking lot of a 7-11 on S. Kiely Boulevard. Parkpettiford, 22, was shot and killed during the carjacking.

An officer then spotted the car on Highway 280 near Highway 101 shortly after 9 p.m. He followed it off the highway and called for backup, police said. But the suspects stopped and opened fire at an intersection where another patrol car was already stopped, according to a police press release. Two officers were shot. They were treated at a local hospital and released.

Muldrow allegedly then got out of the car. Officers continued to follow the car until the drive crashed into a home. Then officers arrested Wilbanks, who they said was driving the vehicle.
